We all have seen pretty long takes in many film. I happened to see Joe Wright's Atonement again yesterday night. I have storified a few tweets which I did this morning.

Was taken aback by this 5 and half minute long long steadicam shot from Atonement. youtu.be/tgILEmJFw2o Excellent choreography.

There were many films, but I believe Hitchcock's 'Rope' was one of the first famous film to have a 10 minute long-take

I used to refer long-takes as tracking shots until a DOP corrected me. In fact, Orson Wells has made a tracking Long-Take in 'Touch of Evil'

In fact the Long-take in Theo Angelopoulos' 'Eternity and a Day' is text book for cinematographers. Every movement has a meaning.

The flying scene in Alejandro Amenabar's 'Sea Inside' technically is not a long-take(but we dont feel edits) it does the job of a long take.

The dialogue scene through corridor in Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' is another example of Long-take. Shows the time taken, how cool they are.

The intro long-take in 'Strange Days' disturbs you like hell. Film was made in 95, still she used a handheld camera not a steadicam.

Whatever be the meanings, 'Russian Ark' hold the record for long-takes. The film is 95 minute long, single steadicam shot - No edits.

Satyajit Ray has used long-takes in many of his film. Dream scene- Nayak, Monkey scene-Charulata and so on.

In fact Andre Bazin had written about Long-takes. He expressed that it was an ultimate realization of cinematic potential.

Starting... Match number 62 of the Indian Premier League – Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Mumbai Indians; Mumbai was chasing and AB De Villiers had been mic’d up; commentators were Tom Moody and Danny Morrison. Vinay Kumar ran in to bowl the 5^th ball of his 1^st over, the white ball hit the batsman’s pad down the leg side and AB caught it. Up went AB and the bowler with a big appeal. MI had just lost Tendulkar and Gibbs and being a Mumbai Indian supporter, I started quaking in my boots. But it was quite bizarre that the umpire called it a wide.

I was relieved, but still quite tensed whether the Mumbai Indians would be able to score another 170 odd runs.

ABD (who was mic’d up, jokingly): “I don’t want to get myself into trouble so I won’t say much. I knew it hit the pad”
Tom Moody (Commentator): “Hey, why did you appeal mate if you knew it hit the pad”
ABD: “Haha, I was appealing for the umpire not to put his hands up.” (Laughter in the commentary box)
That conversation for me was like having a stress relief tablet.
